Compliment and Compliment Response

Hello guys, nice to meet you in this morning. Here, I want to show you my lesson plan in conversation. In this post, we will talk about compliment and compliment response. But before I give my student lesson about it, I will ask them to speak out. I will divide this post into three activity


A. Pre-Activities
1. Reading Activity
In this activity, students will have a reading segment. They must read and understand about "What's in a name?". The text is available page 12 in Here

After that, the teacher can give some questions orally about the page. The questions are available in the same page.

2. Speaking Ability

I provide a video above about Taylor Swift. I ask my students to retell about the article in video by using their own words.

B. Main Activities
In this activity, I will give them lesson about compliment and compliment response. 
1. Compliment
Compliment is a good evaluation from the speaker to the hearer. Compliment consists of four topics.
a. Appearance
Examples: You look so beautiful. You've beautiful hair. You are adorable.
b. Ability
Examples: You are an excellent student. You've excellent English
c. Possession
Examples: You have cool shoes. Your laptop is so expensive.
d. Character
Examples: You are very helpful. You are so kind.

2. Compliment Response
Compliment Response is an utterance to respond to compliment given.
Examples:
a. Appreciation: Thank you
b. Agreement: Yes, this is my new laptop.
c. Disagreement: No, this is not Blackberry but it's Mito.
d. Question: Really?
e. Downgrade: This is a second-hand product.
f. Upgrade: Yes, this is a new brand of samsung.
g. Return: Your laptop is the best.
h. History: My father bought from Singapore.

The following activities, the students will identify some utterances from the video below.
Which utterance is compliment and compliment response? Please provide a table consist of two columns.

After that, the teacher asks the students to read their works. The teacher must correct incorrect utterance and pronunciations. After this, the teacher asks the students to give some comments (They must use compliment) about some character in the following video. For instance: I like the boy. He is really cute. The girl has beautiful hair.

C. Post Activity
The teacher asks the student to give four compliment (different topics) to four different students. It would be fun if they make in some sentence each topic. Make sure the complimentee will respond to compliment for complimenter.

Untuk mbak sendiri kami tawarkan English Conversation atau dikenal dengan English for work and life. Dimana program ini lama belajaranya 3 bulan per paketnya. Tiga kali dalam seminggu.

Mengenai jadwal dan hari kursusnya tergantung hasil placement testnya mbak. Kita ada kelas jam 19.00 – 20.20.

Kemungkinan jadwal belajar Senin, Rabu, Jumat atau Selasa, Kamis, Sabtu

Untuk English Conversation itu sendiri terdiri dari 4 level atau tingkatan. Conversation 1 sampai conversation 4 dan masing-masing level ada unit kompetensi dan kurikulumnya, untuk menentukan level setiap peserta diwajibkan mengikuti placement test. Begitu mbak Betty.

Boleh tahu mbak pulang kuliah jam berapa? (kalau sudah kuliah)

Jam : 14.00

Kalau mbak berkenan nanti saya coba bantu carikan kelas untuk jam 16:00 atau 19:00

Sistem belajarnya di sini bagaimana ya?

Secara khusus English conversation, kami menerapkan metode pendekatan komunikatif (Communicative Approach), dimana setiap peserta akan terbiasa dan tidak sungkan dan malu menggunakan bahasa Inggrisnya. Biasanya siswa enggan bicara bahasa Inggris karena takut salah, maka instruktur kami tidak langsung menyalahkannya, akan tetapi membenarkan kalimatnya tanpa membuat siswa tersebut minder. Ini target kami yang pertama, setelah siswa tersebut berani bicara, instruktur kami akan lebih mudah membimbing agar kualitas bahasa Inggrisnya lebih baik.

Selain itu, kami menerapkan kurikulum berbasis kompetensi, dimana kurikulum ini lebih berorientasi pada penguasaan speaking atau conversation skill. Persentasenya adalah 80% speaking competency dan 20% structure atau grammar. Sebab pada umumnya grammar bisa dipelajari secara otodidak atau membaca buku namun speaking harus sering berinteaksi dan berlatih. Begitu bu Betty.

Instrukturnya darimana?

Kami memiliki instruktur full time dari Universitas ternama dan memiliki pengalaman 3 tahun. Untuk menjamin mutu pengajaran kami, dalam hal seleksi guru juga kami melibatkan pihak lembaga Sertifikasi Kompetensi Bahasa Inggris.

Nanti apabila anak saya belajar di sini 3 bulan, ada nggak jaminan bisa?

Untuk jaminan, kami  berusaha semaksimal mungkin dengan strategi dan metode belajar yang saya terangkan, intinya kalau peserta aktif melatih dan membiasakan diri untu tampil maka dia akan terampil dan itulah jaminannya bu Betty.

Sebab skill berbahasa itu adalah seni dan keterampilan, lancar berbahasa apabila sering melatih.

Berapa biayanya?

Biaya pendaftaran Rp 100.000 (modul book, cd listening dan student report) dan biaya pendidikannya Rp. 300.000 untuk 3 bulan.

Apa itu sudah pasti dibuka?

Sudah bu. Sebab mayoritas kelas sudah hampir mencukupi jumlah siswa maksimal, contoh untuk conversation 1 tinggal 2 orang lagi. conversation 2 tinggal 1 orang lagi. Sebab maksnimal siswa 15 orang mbak.

Kalau placement test lama ngga ya?

Placement test itu sendiri perlu waktu 15 menit – 20 menit gitu bu Betty, ada test tertulis, test listening, dan speaking dengan konsultan bahasanya langsung.
